Belper Food and Community Hub Update

Published Wed, 08/06/2022 by

As it has been some time since we last touched base, we just wanted to give you a quick update on The Food & Community Hub…

It has been amazing to reopen fully following the lifting of covid restrictions and we are now back to being open for people to come in for a cuppa and chat. Most sessions we also have lunch available – free to anyone who comes along.  The Hub sessions are a wonderful, relaxed place for a catch up over a drink and meal and all are welcome.

It will not have escaped anyone’s notice that the rise in cost of living is having a huge impact on communities and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.  We are already seeing a rise in our referral numbers.  In Jan 2021 we gave out an average of 23 parcels a week, last month that average was 32 and I suspect this sadly, will only continue to grow.

So, what can we do:

  • Please continue to pray for the project – for all those facing difficulties, that they might have the courage to seek the support they need at this time.
  • The support we receive from across our community amazes us every week and we are blown away by your generosity.  Please continue to support the food bank if you can, by donating regularly.  Keep an eye on our Facebook page for shortages!

The picture below gives you an idea of what goes out in a family bag – the value of these is about £55 each while the value of a single person bag is around £30.  This is an incredible amount donated each week and while we know everyone is feeling the impact of rising costs of living, we would really appreciate it if you could continue to donate food to The Hub so we can continue to support those who are struggling within our community.

  • Predictions are that autumn/winter 2022-2023 will be particularly hard with the possibility of the energy price cap rising again cap and heating going back on.  If you are struggling or know anyone that is struggling, then please get help/encourage others to seek help now so we can build resilience before the winter. Citizens Advice are available at the Hub for drops in when we are open, or appointments can be booked on 0808 278 7954.
  • We also have an ACTS435 advocate in Belper now – this is a charity supporting online giving, directly connecting those who want to give with those who need help.  We have already been able to help with the purchase of a cooker, a bed, a washing machine, and energy arrears. Please check out their website for more information https://acts435.org.uk/ or contact Jenny, our advocate on acts435@hopeforbelper.com

Thank you again for the continued support – as I have said above everyone is welcome to come along so, please do call in, see what we are doing and have a chat.  We would love to see you.  If you want any more information, please feel free to contact me on foodhub@hopeforbelper.com or for regular updates on what we need please follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/hopeforbelper

Thanks, Jo Lambourne
